The Tree of Life Drum and Dance Society, a performance ensemble from Chelsea, Michigan. will be in residency at the Opera House for two days, with workshops on West African drumming (on the Djembe drum) and dance.. Our goal is to bring multi-cultural awareness by sharing traditional drum and dance from Africa, Cuba, Brazil, and more.

Drums are provided and no prior experience with drumming is needed to participate. A performance on Saturday night will put it all together, and workshop attendees are invited to join.. For tickets to the performance or workshop registration, contact the Cheboygan Opera House at: theoperahouse.org or call 231.627.5841.

We are a drum and dance society that supports one another.  We empower each individual to take their own moment to shine.  Most importantly we like to have fun and educate our audience through theater.  We fuse folkloric movement with the modern contemporary vision to create an exciting, high energy dance performance that leaves audiences with wide-eyes and wind-blown hair.”

Lynn Becomes a Certified DrumFIT Instructor!

According to Alana Schieck, DrumFit Program Director,  there are only 9 certified drum aerobic instructors in the State of Michigan - certified through the organization called “Drum FIT”. Lynn Turner became one of the nine on August 19, 2019. Additional training in this unique form of exercise coupled with Lynn’ s talent in percussion and dance has enhanced the overall drum aerobic exercise sessions.. Lynn says about the training, “I found it amazing and really informative regarding current research into the brain and body. For example, new fMRI studies show how much more of the brain is engaged when someone is actually playing music as opposed to just listening to music. And we sure do play music in drum aerobics!” Another example that Lynn shares with her classes has to do with building the brain with certain body patterns during the workout. “We do a cross over pattern with the drumsticks on the exercise balls. Brain studies have shown actual increase in brain tissue in the corpus callosum from these specific types of exercises embedded in the routines. . The final exam to become certified was to have a class video recorded for analysis. Thanks to the folks at Bay View Association who filmed the class in none other than ‘Loud Hall’”. Lynn passed the final exam with flying colors. Congratulations to Lynn and to the Drum Village organization!

Drum Boat Shipwreck Cruise

Imagine going out on a glass bottom boat to view shipwrecks in Lake Huron. The Captain drops anchor and puts on flood lights underneath to see the shipwrecks and current inhabitants of the waters. Then imagine after observing all of that wonder, then being a participant of an orchestrated Drum Circle on the boat — and drum to the Fishes! Seating is limited so make your reservations early. SPECIAL DRUM CIRCLE - DRUM TO THE PLANTS AND EARTH “Lavender Drum Circle”

Sunday Evening Lavender Field Drum Circles will be set up in the fields of the beautiful lavender plants.  Join this ancient activity of a drum circle with facilitator Lynn Turner.  The intention is to drum peaceful vibrations into the earth while being surrounded by its beauty.  Don’t worry about mosquitoes.  The lavender plants will take care of them.  The magic is that no matter who shows up and no matter what instruments are used, at some point in the experience a unique group rhythm is created.

Dates/times: July 21st (8:00- 9:00 pm); August 11th (8:00 – 9:00 pm).  If it rains, we will move into the barn.

Cost:  $20 per session - Cash or check only. Pay in the field (or at the barn door if it rains).

Ages:  All ages are welcome, but those under 18 with supervisor of an adult

Bring:  There will be just a few extra drums to share, so if you have a drum, shaker, or some type of percussive instrument—bring it.   If you don’t have one, bring something to bang on (i.e. empty plastic gallon milk jug, cardboard box, 5-gallon plastic bucket with wooden spoons…)  Sorry, no melodic instruments at this gathering.

National Senior Fitness Day - May 29th - Independence Village

Five people from the Friendship Center of Petoskey helped to kick off the event at Independence Village during the afternoon of May 29th. Ann, Mary, Sandy, Harold, and Paul were joined by twenty residents at Independence Village and had a roaring great time! Can Seniors Rock? Oh yes they can! And, by the way, how old is too old to drum? Here is a couple who live at Independence Village happily drumming away at 98 and 101 years old. You go, Betty and Harry! Just goes to show you that you are never too old to drum!!

What better way to celebrate National Senior Fitness Day than to jump into a Drum Aerobic Session at Independence Village of Petoskey? Come and join the fun. FREE event. Yep, as always, no experience is necessary. Bring a water bottle and wear loose, comfortable clothing and gym shoes.

We were at Independence Village last year conducting a Drum Circle inside their beautiful facility.. On May 29th, however, instead of a drum circle, we will hold a Drum Aerobic session using the exercise balls as our drums accompanied by the music to groove with. If the weather permits, we will conduct the session outdoors in front of the building.

Never too old to drum! Harry & Betty - 98 & 101 years old.

Drum Aerobics at the Residences at Harbor Watch

What a great time we had at the beautiful facilities located in the Residences at Harbor Watch in Petoskey. This group can rock! And everyone kept time with the oldies but goodies music. Not that you have to keep time with the music. As I always say, “keep moving, singing, or dancing along with the groove… you don’t have to do exactly what I do. The secret is: as long as you keep moving, you WIN” And this group could show how you can move and groove while sitting down. I saw so many happy faces. Thanks to Patti O’Malley, Life Enrichment Director at Harbor Watch, for bringing in the drums.

Drum Circles at Pineview Cottage - Assisted Living in Harbor Springs

Northern Michigan Drum Village took the magic of the drums to Pineview Cottage - a premier assisted living community in Harbor Springs on April 11th. Two drum circles were facilitated that day. The first one was with the memory care residents. They really got into the drumming. Some residents preferred to use the shakers or tambourines, and some preferred the djembes (African hand drums). The staff really got into the djun-djuns.(larger African drums). A great group rhythm exploded right off the top of the 45 minute session. The second session was conducted with the assisted living residents. It was another hour of rhythm connection, fun and laughter as people explored the percussive instruments. So many felt energized after the drum circles and many smiles appeared.

This turned out to be a lot of fun.. The challenge was to get the equipment over to the Friendship Center during the blowing wind and snow. How about the hearty Northern souls who braved the blizzard weather on this lovely day in February?! There were some special moments during the one hour session. Different people traded off stations. Many were amazed at what a good workout they were getting while having so much fun.

November 8th was the kick-off for the Drum Circle series and begun with 22 residents participating on that day. On this first day, a woman asked to play one of the big African drums during the session. She stood and played the largest of the djun-djun drums with drum sticks for quite awhile before sitting and continued to play the middle sized djun-djun. After the session I am told that she was 100 years old. Yes!
